3-Minute Reset · For the drive · 3 minutes
My mom taught me this one. When stress climbs — especially behind the wheel — she’d tell me to gently repeat a single phrase. Not to fix anything. Just to give my mind one calm thing to hold.
The practice
Sit or drive as you are. Loosen your shoulders. Nothing else needs to change first.
- Settle in as you are — sitting, or hands resting on the wheel. Let your shoulders soften.
- Breathe out slowly, and on that exhale, silently say the phrase. Soft, unhurried, no counting.
阿彌陀佛
Ā-mí-tuó-fó · say it slowly, once per breath out
- When your thoughts wander — and they will — simply return to the words. No judgment.
- Continue for about three minutes, or until your breathing feels a little slower.
Three minutes is enough to feel your breathing slow and the knot in your chest loosen.
Why this works
Repetition gives an anxious mind a gentle anchor, so it can stop racing and settle — calmer, lighter, steadier. You’re not forcing calm; you’re giving your attention one soft place to rest, and letting the rest follow.
The goal isn’t to empty your mind. It’s to give it one calm thing to hold.
